Case Study | Application of Gear Pump Metering and Proportioning System in Automatic Transmission Spraying Line

In the automotive and industrial transmission systems sector, the transmission housing, as a core component, relies on coating quality that directly impacts product protection, assembly consistency, and long-term reliability. For globally positioned, large-scale transmission manufacturers, automated spraying must not only ensure stable surface finish but also balance efficiency and cost control under high-cycle production conditions.

With the continuous diversification of transmission models and increasing production line cycle times, traditional spraying methods have gradually revealed bottlenecks in color-change efficiency, flow stability, and material utilization. During this automated spraying line upgrade, the client—a globally leading transmission system manufacturer—aimed to further reduce color-change time, minimize paint waste, and enhance line stability and process traceability while maintaining coating uniformity and surface quality.

Based on these requirements, the line integrated TEDA's robotic-integrated gear pump metering and proportioning system, enabling a systematic optimization of the automated transmission spraying process.

01 Integrating Flow Control "onto the Robot"

TEDA's integrated gear pump flow control system incorporates the gear pump, color-change valve, pressure monitoring, and regulation units directly onto the robot body. Driven by a servo motor, the gear pump achieves precise, quantitative control of paint flow. Compared to traditional remote supply and pressure regulation methods, this solution significantly shortens the paint delivery path, making flow adjustment more direct and responsive, effectively reducing the impact of system fluctuations on spray quality. Additionally, the integrated design of the color-change valve and cleaning unit enhances the efficiency of color changes and cleaning processes, providing reliable support for multi-color, high-frequency color-change applications in transmission spraying.

02 System Design Aligned with Transmission Spraying Process Characteristics

  • In this project, the integrated gear pump flow control system fully considered the process requirements of transmission housing spraying:
  • Servo-driven gear pump for quantitative supply, ensuring stable and continuous paint output
  • Real-time monitoring of inlet and outlet pressure to maintain system stability
  • Flow control unit positioned close to the applicator, reducing line lag and pressure loss
  • Flexible configuration for multi-color, single-component spraying, balancing process stability and system economy
  • Through precise control of spray flow, coating consistency was significantly improved, effectively reducing film thickness variation and manual intervention.

03 Quantifiable Application Results

After stable operation, the automated transmission spraying line achieved clear and sustainable improvements:

  • Color-change time significantly reduced, minimizing non-productive time
  • Paint utilization noticeably improved, with comprehensive savings reaching approximately 30%
  • Enhanced film thickness uniformity and surface quality, reducing rework and rejection rates
  • Reduced solvent consumption for cleaning, lowering operating costs and VOC emissions
  • Key process parameters monitorable and traceable, providing data support for stable production
  • System stability and reproducibility ensured reliable support for high-cycle continuous production

04 Stable Operation Supporting High-Intensity Continuous Production

Under high-load operating conditions, the integrated gear pump flow control system maintained reliable performance. Through coordinated servo control and pressure monitoring, the system achieved stable, smooth paint output even during frequent color changes and continuous operation, meeting the high demands of automated transmission spraying for consistency and reliability.

"This system has significantly improved the stability and consistency of the spraying process, reduced errors from manual operations, and achieved precise control over paint flow, fully meeting our production requirements."
